David Week 1: Artistic Inspiration

Image
August 30, 2022      I love drawing. My entire life I have been doing art (especially drawing) in one way or another, and I’ve learned and grown as an artist since I started. I’ve always enjoyed doing art, but I drifted away from it for a while. Starting on the Israel trip, I got back into drawing in my sketchbook and it has been very pleasant and gratifying. I have watched myself become a better artist, and have seen improvements in my art and the different types of drawing I have been making. Looking at my sketchbook, you can really tell the different phases I was going through while drawing. Some sketches would be of items around me at the time, others would be horrifically deformed monstrosities. The majority of pieces in my sketchbook are (surprise, surprise) superheroes. They aren’t normal heroes and vary from being able to open any door with their chin to having non-retractable swords coming from their shoulders. I haven’t really been making many new or...

Andrew Week 1: The Incredible Hulk (2008) is Underrated

Image
The Incredible Hulk (2008) is one of the most underrated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. It has solid acting, a fun plot, and special effects that hold up pretty well for a movie that came out in 2008. I think this movie is not looked on fairly when compared to all of the other movies in the MCU.  As this was the second movie to be released in the entire franchise, the filmmakers didn’t have a lot to look at when trying to draw inspiration. The movie that preceded it, Iron Man (2008) was a critical and commercial success, and it spawned the entire franchise. What followed The Incredible Hulk was the most successful movie franchise in history. Movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were worldwide blockbusters and cultural phenomena. Others like Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: No Way Home are beloved by fans. This movie, however, is almost forgotten. Here’s the thing, I don’t think the movie is perfect. However, I don’t think that it d...

Amelia Week 1: Nicknames Are a Collection of Memories

Image
One of the first nicknames I ever got was Meli (pronounced as mail - ee (my name but without the a ’s)). I got this nickname from my older brother when I was a toddler and originally hated it. I thought it was my brother’s way of teasing me, but I soon learned that it was his way of showing love. Meli eventually spread to my little brother who also started calling me that after he heard it from my older brother. This nickname stuck, and it is actually still going strong. It would be really weird and unnatural if my little brother went up to me and called me Amelia even today. Recently, the nickname Oatmealiat (pronounced oatmeal-yat) has been thrown around between my brothers because my name somewhat sounds like oatmeal and the “iat” at the end makes it sound more Hebrew. That nickname is only for comedic purposes; they usually just call me Meli.       The next nickname I got was Mimi (pronounced me-me), given to me by my parents. It has become a common household n...

Jayda Poller Week 1: Is Preference Problematic?

Image
Today, August 29th, I was discussing the difficulty that I was having in coming up with a topic for this blog post among my friends. That was when my friend, whom we will refer to as her favorite fruit, “strawberry”, spoke up. Strawberry, in a joking manner, suggested that I write about whether I like cats or dogs more. This is what started my thought process, and led me to think about whether I was a dog person or a cat person, but why pick between the two choices?  Generally, when someone says they are a dog person, the ladder's thoughts automatically assume that the person has a variety of traits. These traits tend to include being agreeable, energetic, and overall more extroverted. On the contrary, cat people are stereotyped as being more lonely, standoffish, and introverted. I asked an outside source what she thought of when I mentioned dog people. She said that she thinks they are “loyal and adventurous people”. When asked about her first thoughts when I mentioned cat people,...
