David Week 4: Live-Action (2003) Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat
“Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” is an elegant and astounding motion picture about how two siblings bond and learn to accept their differences. This movie teaches us that you should never overwork yourself, and sometimes, it is acceptable to have a little excitement in your life. I first watched this movie and was astonished at the amazing quality and hilarious comedy that was inserted for the adults.
When you watch “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” for the first time, you may have a different reaction than I did, and there is a valid reason for that. In modern society, children and adults take offense to much more than they did in my day. Amy Hill, who played Mrs. Kwan in “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat”, said “He [Mike Myers] had his handlers dress his trailer, and his area was all covered with tenting because he didn’t want anybody seeing him. It was so weird. It was just the worst. It was like I was there forever, and my daughter was 2 and a half and I felt like I was missing her first everything. I was miserable. I just thought it was really rude for him to not take all of us into consideration.” I believe one reason this movie is so disliked is because Mike Myers’ bad attitude on set probably made many people too uncomfortable to enjoy this cinematic masterpiece.
I went around my school campus two years ago and asked many children if they liked the Live Action (2003) The Cat in the Hat, and I was flabbergasted to find out that many people have not seen this amazing film. Hearing this news, my new theory for why people find this movie bad, and/or offensive is because due to people having not viewed it, less people can enjoy it.
Rewatching “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat”, I was just as thrilled to see how great this movie is as I was to watch it at my young age. Rewatching this movie can also change your perspective, and how society treats this film. Many people did not like this movie when it came out, for some reason. It was revealed that Mike Myers was contractually obligated to act in “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat”. He disagreed with the script and the direction the movie was taking, and tried to get out of his contract. Universal sued him for $3.8 million. I find it strange that he did not want to be a part of this great film, and I am hoping that reading this report will change the perspective of all the people who disliked this movie.
