Jolie Week 1: The Benefits of Dance
Body, energy, action, time, and space. These words represent the five elements of dance. As in all sports, there are pros and cons but I want to focus on the pros. I dance competitively and there are many benefits when being able to dance at this level. Dance can be an individual sport, a team sport, or both at the same time. Whether dancing individually or as a team, both teach the dancer discipline in conjunction with these five elements. This discipline is both physical and mental. Disciplining your body through physical actions and mental energy is a positive skill that all dancers strive to achieve and utilize in life outside of dance. Being spacially aware carries over to many aspects outside of the dance world. Timing and spacing in group dances, although seemingly natural, are skills that are tirelessly worked on in the studio. These skills transfer to being considerate of others’ space in everyday life. Dance teaches one to be a team player and work well with others. Working well with others encompasses one's own team as well as other teams that will be encountered. Everyone is giving their all and deserves respect for their efforts. Sometimes the results aren’t favorable but that doesn’t mean respect isn’t earned. Even if one doesn’t do as well as they hoped, if they are treated with respect by their team, that would motivate them to continue working and striving to do better next time. Having a supportive team behind you, including supportive coaches, helps build confidence and self-esteem. This confidence and self-esteem used while performing in front of a large group of people carries over to real-world experiences. Holding yourself with confidence is a necessary skill when dealing with challenges outside of the dance community. I have danced for over twelve years and I am grateful for the lessons and opportunities that have been presented to me through this important chapter of my life.
I completely agree with the importance of sports, especially dance. Body movement especially during teen years is so important. Overall, I think all sports, but mostly team sports provide so many benefits and life lessons. Im currently on the volleyball team and love having a team that I can count on and grow with.
ReplyDeleteAs a former dancer myself, I have contemplated a lot on my dance experience since quitting last year. Especially when I was younger, I was so caught up on the notion that I must always win. Yes, winning is what is strived for, however, you explained very well the principles in which that is possible. Without these underlying principles such as teamwork and support, your team will not achieve a win. I did not realize this until I got older, and now that I have quit dance, I take the foundational dance values with me and apply them to everyday life. This has helped me immensely with day to day interactions with others and as you said, we must strive to support one another, not break each other down. Your blog is very well written and a very accurate representation on what it really means to be a dancer.
