Leora Week 2: The Importance of the Performing Arts

The Importance of the Performing Arts

I have participated in the performing arts from a young age. This entails numerous theater productions, various ballet recitals, and many concerto pieces and string orchestras throughout the course of my life. My own experiences in the performing arts have led me to believe that the arts should be accessible and available to all students around the world.

As I matured, the performing arts became a constant in my life, bringing purpose to me at times when I needed it most. Most importantly, the performing arts presented me with opportunities to express myself, opportunities I feel everyone should be given. In ballet, I was able to work together with others and gain an awareness of my body. Through ballet, I also found my passion for teaching which led me to start a ballet class for the children of my community. In theater I was able to find my voice, learning important interactive and communicative skills that led me throughout life. In violin, I was able to collaborate with others and learn the patience and discipline that comes with participating in an orchestra group. The performing arts were an outlet for me to be able to let go of the stresses and expectations hoisted on me in my school life and focus solely on the things I was passionate about. Therefore, I think it’s vital to students' mental health and well-being that all schools around the world offer the performing arts.

In an article for the British School Warsaw, Nord Angelia, director of Music and Performing Arts at the Juilliard School, wrote that the “performing arts encourage children to explore their emotions, expand their imagination.. and develop their own, unique voice. Each discipline of music, dance and drama engage a child's brain, body, and emotions in different ways to encourage their confidence” (Angelia 2022). Here, I think that Angelia encapsulates the beauty of the performing arts perfectly, especially at a school like Julliard where student life revolves around the arts. Children feel welcome and safe to express themselves in their own ways through their talents and passions. This is the ideal environment that all students should be surrounded by.

Do you have any passions or talents that have stayed with you and helped you at times when you might have needed them?

  1. I really enjoyed reading about your experience in how the performing arts have impacted you. Those talents to you are similar to what art is to me. Drawing has always helped me. Whether it kept me entertained to draw on my work during class, or if it were to calm myself down, there is always use in carrying that skill with me.
