Phoebe Nissanoff- Week 4: Pancakes vs. Waffles

There is definitely controversy surrounding the question whether pancakes are better than waffles or vice versa. While both pancakes and waffles have very similar batters because of their basic ingredients, there is no way to convince me that a chewy, indigestible waffle is better than a fluffy, delicate pancake. However, this breakfast debate becomes more difficult when considering detailed factors of each delicacy. Waffles have the incredible ability to be delicious as a sweet meal made with various delicious toppings or even be created into a savory meal, as the famous chicken and waffle sandwich. Although to be completely honest, I personally don't find that sandwich appealing. However, crepes, in the pancake family, can also be filled with a variety of delicious toppings and fillings like nutella and strawberries. Waffles are not the only sweet breakfast that can be made savory. Crepes are often times made into a savory meal with cheese, spinach, and many more combinations. Who would pick to have a sugary, unappealing waffle and chicken sandwich instead of a delicious, fancy savory crepe. In fact, even a basic chocolate chip pancake overrides a waffle, any day. However, pancakes can occasionally be messed up. A sad, flat pancake won't win in a competition against a waffle. With the right toppings and perfect batter both waffles and pancakes will be delicious however a perfect pancake is way better than a perfect waffle. Pancakes' fluffy texture will absorb any syrup and waffles will trap it in between each square. While nobody wants a soggy breakfast, pancakes somehow still manage to be delicious drenched in syrup. There's a reason why it's not International House of Waffles (IHOW) but rather International House of Pancakes (IHOP) that is an American chain delicacy. While IHOP does sell waffles, the star of the menu are obviously their pancakes which happen to also be the star of breakfast food and override waffles. For those of you who would pick neither, would you order french toast instead of pancakes or waffles?

  1. I agree with you in terms of the way each delicacy is served. A plain pancake might not be my choice of desert, but a crepe is definitely a favorite of mine. With that being said, french toast will always be superior in my eyes.
