The importance of Equine Assisted Therapies
Lately, I have been interested in assisted equine therapies, specifically the therapeutic benefits that horseback riding can have on those who have disabilities or any history of trauma. Over this past year, I started volunteering at the Equine Assisted Therapies of South Florida and have learned more and more from firsthand experience; seeing how children who struggle with PTSD and disabilities are able to cope with their issues as they focus and care for their horses.
In a recent analysis of volume 101 of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, researchers found that horseback riding helps “boost strength, balance, and other skills for both children and adults with a range of physical and developmental disabilities” (Diament, 2017). I think this goes to show just how beneficial horseback riding can be beyond the accountability and patience that comes with horsemanship, as it can also help these children better their balance and coordination. In my own experience as a rider, I also find that once I am on my horse I am able to forget about any troubles or stresses of the day, focusing solely on my horse and my riding. This continues even when I get off my horse and go back to the barn to shower and feed her, as this to my trainers is considered part of my ride. Learning to care and provide for something other than yourself teaches you the values of dependability and love that prepare you for real-life relationships of meaning and fulfillment. Have you ever experienced personal growth from caring for and providing for an animal (maybe your dog or cat)?

Your blog provides a whole other perspective on therapeutic approaches which i find very intriguing. The physical and mental benefits of equine assisted therapies are completely unique compared to traditional therapy methods. Although not everyone in need of therapeutic care has access to horses, your blog provides the understanding that this mode of therapy is applicable to more attainable approaches, such as providing for a dog or other pets. Very well written good job.
