Victoria Week 5: You're dress coded.
While walking to my next class, I approached a sign that was informing us about a possible alter in the dress code within reach. Obviously, this made me and many other students upset knowing what we can wear to school is already very limited. While I do believe that certain restrictions on what we choose to wear to school is crucial, I often find myself pondering if some of the rules implemented surpass a certain extent.
Dress code is a big issue in many schools that both students and teachers need to understand. To start, there is no doubt it restricts students, primarily girls, from expressing themselves through what they are most comfortable with wearing. Reinforcing high schoolers with strong limitations on what they are allowed to wear reduces their freedom of wearing a style they are specifically interested in and feel the most confident wearing.
Many people, girls especially, feel like the dress code targets girls unfairly more than it affects boys. In my opinion, this is true, as I feel like there are inevitably more options for what boys can wear than what we can. Some even say that harsh dress codes put pressure on girls’ self-esteem starting from a young age. Over our many years at school, I’m sure we have all heard at least a couple times that for the most part, dress codes are enforced to limit the distraction and attention on us from other people. But, instead of stressing the idea of what we wear distracts others, why don’t we teach people to not worry about our clothing? I believe if dress codes are executed better, it will create a better and more comfortable environment for us all.
Nonetheless, the school dress code is essential and has intentions of being helpful and maintaining a safe and sophisticated environment for the school. However, some students might argue they perceive it as more of a burden than good.
What do you think? Do you think the dress code is a bit too harsh?
I agree, I do believe dress codes that have been executed have enforced sexist restrictions specifically targeting girls. Although dress codes are essential, I think we can implement student feedback in which the school should take into account when creating these dress codes.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I feel as though the people who have to follow the dress code should be the ones to decide what it entails.
