Amelia Week 6: Fashion Is Art.

Many people will view unique runway fashion pieces as horrific pieces of garbage that have no meaning, however, that is far from the truth. The truth is, designers put countless hours of work into creating their idea of an exemplary outfit. Yes, fashion is subjective, as is all art; someone can like a shirt while another person doesn’t, but all fashion is art and has intent behind it that some may not understand. In my opinion, the craziest and most strange runway looks do not entail that the designer is juvenile or insane, but that they are creative and are able to open fashion lovers’ eyes to new ideas.

Fashion is ever-changing and reflects current trends as well as the current era. Runway looks may be impractical, but most of them are not designed for comfy houseware but rather because the designer wants to use humans as a canvas to express themselves. I love being exposed to new ideas in the fashion industry that make me think about them and curious to learn more. There have been some very out-of-the-box looks that have caused controversies. Not everyone has to like them, but they do need to understand that it is all creative expression in one way or another. Designers carefully consider shapes, colors, fabrics, textures, and patterns to form their mental image. They each develop their own voice and style, just like if it was any other type of art.

When finding a picture on social media of a celebrity’s outfit at a formal event, some people are confused about how it is even considered fashion, but if you look deeper, and maybe even look into the designer, you will realize that everyone’s style and voice are different. If all paintings looked the same, how would certain ones become infamous? The world would be so bland in this case. The fluctuating fashion world feeds into our growing and changing peoplehood, and, because of this, I think fashion can teach us to be more open-minded and accepting. I love fashion, and I always find myself sketching dresses on class notes. Runway looks that might be labeled as “controversial” teach me to not be afraid to express myself through my art. I am in awe when I see new fashion pieces that I’ve never seen before, and clothing has also had a significant impact in history. What’s a topic that never fails to surprise you?

  1. I entirely agree that fashion is art and there are many different layers to every piece of clothing. Many people overlook the amount of effort and thought that goes into each piece that hits the runway. Fashion is a way for the everyday person to express themself but also a way for the designer to reveal their creative mind. Fashion will forever be a mind-blowing style of art and I will always have the utmost respect for all designers.

  2. Fashion is art. I completely agree with that statement and I think you explained it very well. I love being exposed to new fashion trends and buying new pieces of clothing but runway fashion is beyond more than that. I love looking at this amazing wearable art and hope to one day be able to witness a fashion week show.
