Amelia Week 8: Comfort vs Favor

If you were to ask me what my
favorite show was and what my comfort show was, they would be two separate shows. I would probably say Jane the Virgin for my favorite show, but for my comfort show, I would definitely say New Girl (watch both now!). I feel like most of my friends don’t hear me talk about New Girl as much as I talk about my other favorite shows because my favorite shows keep me on the edge of my seat, take me on a rollercoaster of emotions, and force me to be invested in the plot and characters, while shows like New Girl calm my nerves and make me feel at peace. New Girl tells the story of a girl moving into an apartment with four guy roommates. There was still an interesting plot line with twists and turns that I didn’t expect, but more than that, I liked it because I could open up my laptop and watch Jess, Nick, Schmidt, Winston, and Coach take on another part of life. Their unique personalities made each one of them likable in their own way, and by the end of the show, I felt so connected to them after seeing them grow, go through good and bad relationships, get jobs, bond with their families, and get married that they just gave me a familiar, homey feeling.

Realizing this has helped me learn that it's okay to seek comfort in certain situations and how much I personally love the feeling of it. I learned that feeling comfortable is a feeling that I take for granted until I suddenly feel extremely out of place or unauthentic. For instance, I think clothing brings people comfort. Not because of the fabric or material feeling soft, but because, generally, people wear something that they are comfortable with and that make them feel good about themselves. But, if you put them in something that is too out of their comfort zone and takes away their personal style and expression, they won’t be as joyous and peaceful. Being comfortable in a situation can change your perspective and mood, whether it’s clothing, TV shows, social setting, or a new environment. Examining feelings in depth has helped me learn more about myself and my feelings.

What is something that brings you comfort?

  1. I completely resonate with this! I often find myself always resorting to my comfort show when in certain situations, rather than watching my favorite show. My favorite show is also Jane the Virgin, but I'd say my comfort show is probably Grey's Anatomy. My comfort show changes pretty often; however, I notice that my comfort shows are usually ones I have watched and finished in the past.
