Amelia Week 9: Thanksgiving is Underrated
Although I have the utmost respect for holidays like Hanukkah, July 4th, Purim, New Years, and Sukkot, Thanksgiving has to be the most underrated of all the holidays. I’m not saying that it is my favorite holiday, but all the other ones are either perfectly rated or overrated, while Thanksgiving is often ignored and forgotten. However, I love Thanksgiving, and if I had to rank all the holidays, it would definitely be ahead of ones like Sukkot and Shavuot. Thanksgiving brings families together without the pressure of having to buy gifts for someone, choose a costume, or commit yourself to tiring rituals. You simply get to have time off of school, reflect on what you’re grateful for, watch football, play football, and share amazing memories with family that you get to reunite and share an amazing meal with.
Thanksgiving has to have one of the most amazing food groups of all holidays, and I will stand by that. If you claim that you hate Thanksgiving food, you might need to try some new recipes, because the food I eat on thanksgiving is so mouth-wateringly delicious. I cannot wait to gather with my family, especially my brother home from college, and enjoy a relaxing and fun holiday that allows us to bond as a family. I already know that I will end up playing a mini Thanksgiving football game with my brothers, and although I usually wouldn’t want to be dragged outside to *attempt to* guard my 5’10 brother, I am excited to follow through with this Thanksgiving custom. When smells of cinnamon, sweet potato, nutmeg, pumpkin, apple, and turkey fill my house, it makes me want to see the leaves changing colors outside and feel the weather starting to get cold, and, although I can’t have that, the instantly recognizable fall aroma makes up for it.
Thanksgiving is a humble holiday. It doesn’t require much, but taking time to focus on appreciation and gratitude in your life is very important to do all year round. This holiday gives people the opportunity to express their thankfulness when they wouldn’t normally consider all the blessings they have to acknowledge and appreciate. I know there are people who only look forward to Black Friday and that places are already decorated for Christmas and Hanukkah, but I believe that we cannot just look past Thanksgiving and skip right to the winter holidays. I am so excited to use these extra days off to spend time with my brother who is finally visiting and to appreciate everyone and everything around me, which, at least to me, is everything a holiday should be. Again, I don’t know if it would be my favorite holiday, but I hope we can agree that it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Do you think Thanksgiving is underrated, perfectly rated, or overrated?
Personally, I think Thanksgiving is most certainly underrated. The perfect mix of food, friends, and family come together to create the perfect holiday. The holiday itself, sends a warm feeling throughout my body just thinking about the hot and crispy apple pie that is served later at dinner.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Thanksgiving is underrated. There isn't much to dislike about Thanksgiving because you can make the holiday whatever you want. Everyone is off from work and school to come together as a family and celebrate. Although there are traditional foods like turkey, who says every family has to eat turkey? People who don't like Thanksgiving just aren't celebrating it right. Each family can make their own traditional, meaningful food. As you said in your post, there isn't much commitment in Thanksgiving, just a time to bond and make memories as a family.
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree with the fact that Thanksgiving is underrated. I quite enjoy spending time with my loved one (and the fact that we don't have school really helps)! I would go as far as to say that Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.
