Aryn Week 8: The Draining Reality With Going To School

Students are constantly faced with a question, which is typically along the lines of, "Do you like school?" or "How was school this week?" and 7/10 students will respond with "Ok" or "Just fine." Although it most likely isn't just okay, most students feel they can only express their true feelings about their school life with others who feel the same, rather than parents or student advisors. However, if you aren't a student in today's society, you genuinely do not realize how draining it is. The repeated schedule: waking up, sitting at a desk for eight hours, participating in an extracurricular, and then finally returning home to finish your homework, any household chores you may have, whatever studying you have to get done, and ultimately, all of that resulting to you getting to bed at roughly one-o'clock in the morning. This constant schedule leaves your average student drained, moody, and extremely overwhelmed. As a high school student, all the 'busy work' handed to you to complete makes you so frustrated because you can't understand the point. However, you always manage to complete countless assignments because you fear your grade may plummet. Students are stuck between answers when they choose to continue to do well in school or put their mental health first. Perhaps you decide to continue to do well in school, and your mental health plunges, putting you into a deeper slump than you previously were. Or you go the route of fixing your mental health and 'pushing the school to the side,' and your result is constantly seeing your grades drop. Honestly, there is no correct answer. The constant struggle makes us question our worth, happiness, and even the ability to continue trying in school. These struggles teach us to look on the bright side:

  • Hanging out with friends on the weekends.

  • Spending time with our family.

  • Even counting the days till it's over.

Do you ever feel discouraged with school?

  1. I agree, this constant cycle leaves students burnt out and puts mental health in jeopardy. Sometimes I feel discouraged because of this draining cycle, which is why I believe that the system must be modified eventually. Although this is certainly not a quick process, teachers can individually provide an encouraging learning environment for students and take into account teen's mental health when giving assignments which would help immensely.

  2. I completely agree, the constant routine leaves me and my fellow peers burnt out and drained all the time. Most time I am discouraged by my work load and it often leaves my mental health at risk. However I have learnt to create schedules for myself and manage my time properly leaving me with minimal stress.
