David Week 10: The Greatness of Crayons
We all remember being little and drawing with crayons. It's a staple in a young kid's life. Everyone has probably used a crayon at least once in their life, without even thinking about it. The reason kid's use crayons are because they're colorful, easy to hold, and last pretty long. Little did anyone realise, crayons are a great drawing tool that can be used for varying purposes, including, but not limited to: a nice texture and roughness, vibrant colors, and thick strokes.
Giving kids crayons at an early age can benefit a child's artistic ability by teaching them about pressure. When drawing or coloring, the opacity of the stroke will be lighter or darker depending on how hard you press on the paper. If you press down harder, you will see darker, thicker strokes. By pressing down lightly, you will get thin, light strokes. The benefit to learning to draw at a you age is that it can creatively influence a child's perspective, and have them see things in a different way that others wouldn't.
Another reason that crayons (specifically that of the Crayola brand) are a superior drawing utensil is the variety of quirky and different names of the vast amount of colors. Examples of the zany names include, but are not limited to: Outer Space, Shamrock, Jazzbery Jam, Inchworm, and Periwinkle. Because Crayola uses these as names for their crayons (my personal favorite being "Periwinkle"), it gives children a sense of excitement to use these colors to, for example, see what color "Shamrock" makes! What is your favorite tool to use while doing something creative?
I really enjoyed reading this blog. As you brought up the various points, I reflected on my personal memories regarding crayons. I never even thought of how the names could have an affect on those who use them. Very well said!!
ReplyDeleteI've always been fascinated with the wide variety of bizarre names Crayola has come up with for crayons. It's so interesting what you said about how these seemingly ridiculous names can have this positive affect on children!
