Jayda Week 10: Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich?
The question of whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich has been a widely controversial topic that has been circulating the internet for almost a decade. Just about every argument has been made about the topic, and the dispute has led to many answers that are rarely agreed upon by the hot dog enthusiasts of the world. Some people are convinced that it is a taco, while others come to the conclusion that it is a roll or a hoagie, but the conversation is no closer to resolution than when it started.
When the definition of a hot dog is searched, the immediate definition given is “a frankfurter, especially one served hot in a long, soft roll and topped with various condiments'', but this definition is so specific that it could lead people to believe that a hot dog requires a roll and condiments; however, after checking a different definition, the definition is simply “a frankfurter”, referring specifically to the meat on the inside of the roll. Additionally, a sandwich could be defined as “an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal”, and a hot dog bun is most definitely not made up of two separate pieces of bread. The various definitions of the commonly disputed food have caused even more views on the argument.
Personally, I simply consider a hot dog its own category of food. The food exceeds and breaks free from the sandwich category. If you go to a hot dog stand and ask for a sandwich, they will simply look at you like you are crazy. Further proving that point, a person is fully capable of asking for a hotdog without a bun, and it is still considered a hot dog, meaning that the name itself refers to the meat on the inside of the soft roll. While there are many opinions on the answer to the question, I think that the only clear answer is that a hot dog is obviously not a sandwich. Do you think a hot dog is a sandwich?
A hotdog is not a sandwich!! I love the point you made about asking for a hotdog without a bun. That would still make it a hotdog, which is why I believe it is its own thing separate from the whole sandwich family. If I was under the impression that I was getting a sandwich and instead got a hotdog, I would definitely not be happy that I was misinformed.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe that a hotdog is not a sandwich as it is not in-between two slices of bread, rather, it is in one properly cut piece of bread. I understand where the opposing side comes from however!
ReplyDeleteThis blog post was a joy to read. I found it similar to my blogpost regarding the pronunciation of GIF. It is a controversial debate regarding a "trivial" topic. Great job.
ReplyDeleteA hot dog is simply NOT a sandwich! I think you are correct, hotdogs belong in their own category of food. A hotdog without a bun, is still considered a hot dog, meaning the food has little do with the bread on either side and more to do with the meat itself.
ReplyDeleteI agree, a hot dog is certainly not a sandwich. But, I wonder what would happen if you did come up to a hot dog stand and ask for a sandwich, might have to try that for fun! This was a very fun read!
