Jolie Week 8: It’s About the Gilmore Girls, Not the Guys
Gilmore Girls is a show about the relationship between a young mother named Lorelei and her daughter Rory. The show starts when Rory is sixteen years old, the age her mother was when she gave birth to her, the show displays the ups and downs of their small-town life. During the first season Rory begins to experience her first love, she meets a charming boy named Dean. To Rory, Dean was her safe space, the ultimate first love. This love did not last long after the arrival of Jess, the most dangerous love in Rory’s life. Jess immediately caught Rory’s eye for his outspoken intelligence and kindness towards the world. This relationship was most definitely an uphill battle from the beginning. Rory was used to her gentleman of a boyfriend that would sacrifice almost anything for her, but this love could not be any more different. This relationship certainly caused Rory the most pain due to how unstable Jess was. He could tell Rory he loves her one day and then leave her the next. All of this trauma ultimately ended their relationship. Some time passes by the stage Rory meets her third and final boyfriend in the series, Logan. Logan challenges Rory intellectually and always tries to push her outside of her comfort zone. They meet in college and stay together until the last episode when their relationship comes to a close.
A major discussion when people finish watching the show is “who’s team are you on Dean, Jess, or Logan?”. Everyone has their preference and their valid or invalid argument behind their choice. As a society, we are always trying to pick teams and be on sides sometimes blinding us from the most important lessons. In the respect to Gilmore Girls, the show is about the relationship between and mother and her daughter, not which boyfriend you like the most. I think this is where some of the best parts of the show get lost or covered by this neverending debate. Viewers are entitled to their opinion but that opinion should not overlook the rest and the heart of the show. Instead of picking a boyfriend’s team, we should pick to be on the Gilmore girls' team.
What are your thoughts on this show? Do you think the focus was too much for the boyfriends?
