Michael Galler Week 6: The Cure for Boredom
Everyone has their own ways of dealing with boredom. Nowadays, some people listen to music or watch a tv show or movie. Some people will go for a walk, make art, or play with a pet. Some people mindlessly scroll through a social media platform. I will play a game such as chess, play with my dog, or play a game on my phone. This past Sunday, I had exhausted both of those options already. So I decided I would do something that I never expected to be able to do: I decided to make a crossword. I got my inspiration from a YouTube video I had seen recently of a crossword puzzle maker who often submits puzzles to the New York Times for publication into the world. He explained how he makes crossword puzzles and all of his different methods for choosing words. He explained how its often very difficult to find the perfect matching words to make the crossword, and how he makes clues for the words. Based on how easy he made it look in the video, I thought it would take 2 hours at the most. It ended up taking me over 8 hours spread across multiple days, and it was nowhere near as good as his crossword. Even though it wasn’t phenomenal, it was still extremely fun, and if I ever have a lot of time to kill, I might make another crossword. What new things have you tried that you found enjoyable? Do you still do it?
I love to try new things. While I usually don't end up sticking to the hobby, I really like that I am able to say that I was at least open to the idea of trying something new. Recently, I got back into the old hobby of drawing, and while I used to not enjoy doing it at all, I now find it a pleasant pastime.
