Nicole Week 9: Music Tastes

If you have known me for a while, you know that I always have a pair of AirPods in at all times listening to music (unless of course, I am speaking with someone, I have manners). Spotify Wrapped can corroborate this fact as my “minutes listened” for 2021 well surpassed all my classmates and friends. So, for the amount of time I have devoted to listening to music, you would think I have a distinct genre or artist I enjoy. But really, it is the exact opposite. The wide variety of genres and artists only stylistically broadened my playlist, rather than refining it. Describing my playlists as incoherent and inconsistent is merely an understatement, so, when people ask me what my music taste is, I simply just respond with: I have no clue. Even my playlists specifically catered for a certain mood is unclear. But really, at the end of the day, it only has to make sense to me, right?

What I cannot stand is people describing my music taste as “bad”, and judging me based off of that. First of all, why does my music taste define me as a person? Second of all, if you are getting defensive over my music maybe you should reevaluate your values! Third of all, my music taste may be random, but I prefer the term abstract or even diverse, simply “bad” invalidates my many hours spent on Spotify which quite honestly offends me. Anyway, how would you describe your music taste?

  1. I honestly feel the exact same way as you because I do not have a distinct taste in music, rather, I like some songs from some genres, and I generally don't like every song an artist makes (except for Taylor Swift music of course). I find that music tends to be an escape for me as I often zone out and get caught up in a song I like. I think it's important to find music you like and appreciate while also respecting others' taste and song choices.

  2. I definitely agree. Although if someone asked me what music genre I listen to I would say pop, it's so much more than that; it would just take a long time to explain, as I think there are offshoots of popular music. I listen to music across many genres because if I listen to a song and I like it, then I will keep listening to it; I don't just exclusively listen to certain artists or genres. I love your point about how people shouldn't judge others' music tastes just because they are random!!

  3. Whenever someone asks me my favorite artist is I always resort to The Weeknd. I am obsessed with The Weeknd and I honestly find others who share the same interest in The Weeknd often have the same personality as me or other interests as well. I completely agree with you as to not judging people based on their music tastes because music tastes completely shape a person's identity. Music is so important in someone's life and I believe it really presents who they are.
