Phoebe Week 7: Independence On The Road

On my 16th birthday in October I was of course excited to open gifts, eat cake, and go out with friends and family, but the most special part of my day aside from all that was getting my license. Having a license comes with a lot of responsibilities, and its a privilege that has completely changed my life over the past few weeks. With my license has come a new sense of responsibility and complete independence. I no longer rely on my parents for an endless list of things that I am now capable of doing on my own. Life before having my license was great, but it was also very different. Of course I loved the simplicity of waking up before school and sitting in my brothers car as he drove me to school. However, now I have the opportunity to drive myself and learn the responsibilities of an adult. It has completed shifted my mind and made me much more of a cautious person. Understanding the dangers of the road and driving by countless accidents in Florida has really opened my eyes about safety. After getting my license I have become much more careful with who I let in my car along with who I will let drive me. Driving every morning and after school has also given me the opportunity to spend time and sit with myself for 20 minutes to first prepare myself for the day and then unwind. Its what I would call “me time” which is something that is so important. Even when my schedule is extremely busy, I have the time to spend with myself and just simply drive and listen to music while of course being safe and paying full attention to the road. I love everything about having my license currently. It has positively changed my life and provided me with something I’ll use forever. Although truthfully, I dont think I’ll ever forget how nervous I was the morning I had to take my driving test. Do you have your license, and if so how has it changed your life?

  1. While I don't have my license, I do have my permit. From my own personal experience, even getting behind the wheel for the first time was so much different than I expected it to be, and I know that when I start driving on my own it will be the same. I've also come to see car accidents from a different perspective as a driver. This morning, on my way to school, I witnessed a biker being hit be a car. From a driver's perspective, all I could think about was what if I hit a person? Things like this make me realize how seriously we all need to take the responsibility of driving so less people get hurt at the hands of our vehicles.

  2. I don't have my license yet, but I can understand and agree with what you said. Having a license gives you freedom and also makes you more responsible. I have seen and heard of many fatal crashes that show why we need to be so careful. When I get my license I'll make sure to enjoy my freedom and independence but stay cautious and safe.
